Manor CE Academy celebrated its 205th anniversary at a special commemorative service at York Minster in March.
The anniversary service, which was attended by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, brought together past, current and prospective students, staff and members of the local community to hear about the school’s history and its plans for the future. The congregation was treated to an array of student-led music, dance and drama pieces, poetry readings and a Malawi drumming performance.
Manor School first opened at the Merchant Taylor’s Hall in Aldwark, York in 1812 and over the last two centuries, it has occupied six different sites, employed 18 headteachers and educated tens of thousands of young people. Manor CE Academy, one of the founding schools of the Hope Learning Trust, York, now has its state-of-the-art facilities located on Millfield Lane, Nether Poppleton.
Mr Simon Barber, Principal of Manor CE Academy, says: “Manor has a proud history, having served the young people of York for 205 years. As a Church of England academy, our Christian values guide, influence and underpin all that we do. We proudly strive to provide a 21st century education for our young people, founded on Christian belief, and carry on the work that the National Society began in the early 19th century.
“This anniversary celebration gave us the opportunity to look back and remember, but more importantly it gave us time to reflect and build on our past successes. It was great to welcome everyone to York Minster, to share our memories, achievements and future ambitions.”
The service was held on Monday 6 March 2017.
