We started the Ultimate Frisbee club back in 2013 when I joined the school. I’d played a bit before when I went to camp the previous summer, and one of our teachers, Mr Candelin, was an Ultimate Frisbee coach for Great Britain.
We now have a team and we compete in U14 and U17 every January in a schools tournament in Wolverhampton. I’ve also had the opportunity to play for the York team alongside university students, and I’ve also played for GB. In July 2016, I went to Belgium to play in the European Youth Ultimate Championships.
It’s such a brilliant unique sport – it’s so underrated and underestimated! It’s active and physically testing. What I like best though is that there’s a great sense of sportsmanship and a big emphasis on the spirit of the game.
I also play the electric guitar. I started three years ago, mainly because my brother plays bass guitar and I wanted to learn an instrument too. I’ve started a band with two friends and we’ve performed at the York Food Festival and in the School Battle of the Bands. It’s really fun and we can practise at the recording studios here at Manor – we’re lucky to have access to really good resources.
In school, I’m part of the worship band, which is a great opportunity. We lead the worship in Eucharist services once every half term. I don’t think other schools have this kind of group or promote that kind of experience as much as Manor does, as we have a focus on Christianity here.
Congratulations to @RachelofYork, founder of @ArcMathsApp and former teacher @manorceacademy whose Maths app has been shortlisted for the Educational App of the Year at the @Bett_show Awards. Very proud that some of our students could help with testing! buff.ly/3qsBdpj
