Pupils, staff and parents have upcycled over 500 plastic bottles, which have been shaped into poppies and painted. The poppies are now displayed at the front of the school on the railings, facing the church at Baldersby St James.
The bottles were donated or collected from the local community areas of Rainton, Baldersby, Sowerby and Ripon.
In the absence of a church service to commemorate Armistice Day, due to Covid restrictions, the children and staff held their daily worship outside school, in front of the colourful display to pay their respects to the nation’s heroes past and present.
Steff Brown, Headteacher at Baldersby St James CE Primary, said “The children have been learning about the war and the relevance of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. In addition to holding out daily worship in front of the poppies, we also observed the two-minute silence at 11am. I was incredibly proud and moved to share this important moment with the school community, with the poppy display as a backdrop.
“Our thanks go to all those involved in creating this beautiful and meaningful display, especially Mrs Wilde, one of our parents, and the Dickie family.”
Baldersby St James CE Primary School is one of ten schools in the Hope Learning Trust which prides itself on bringing together church and community schools.
